Product Overview

Elysium Black Basalt 1" Penny Round Mosaic Tile combines genuine volcanic stone with timeless circular geometry. Deep charcoal and soft black tones create a sophisticated architectural surface, while subtle mineral speckling and natural tonal movement give every sheet authentic stone character.

Approximately 1" round chips are mesh-mounted on an 11" × 11.75" sheet, making the mosaic suitable for bathroom floors, shower surfaces, backsplashes, niches, fireplace surrounds and decorative feature walls. Its dark natural-matte appearance complements contemporary, industrial, Scandinavian and organic-modern interiors.

Recommended Applications

  • Bathroom Floors: Creates a richly detailed dark-stone surface with numerous grout joints.

  • Shower Floors: The petite chip size and frequent grout joints may provide additional traction; however, no product-specific DCOF rating is published.

  • Shower Walls and Niches: Produces a dramatic contrast against white marble, porcelain, glass and light-colored grout.

  • Kitchen and Bar Backsplashes: Adds natural texture and sophisticated charcoal color behind counters, sinks and beverage stations.

  • Powder-Room Feature Walls: Creates a tailored focal point behind vanities and mirrors.

  • Fireplace Surrounds: Suitable outside the firebox when installed over an approved substrate and within the fireplace manufacturer’s clearance requirements.

  • Decorative Borders: Can define transitions between larger-format stone, porcelain or ceramic tiles.

Exterior, pool and continuously submerged installations require written manufacturer approval for the specific climate and water conditions.

Installation and Handling Guidelines

IMPORTANT: NATURAL BASALT INSTALLATION

Black Basalt may contain subtle natural mineral deposits and can respond differently to moisture, grout and enhancing sealers. Test the complete installation system on spare material before proceeding.

  • Dry-Lay the Sheets: Arrange and rotate multiple sheets before installation to distribute natural tonal and mineral variations.

  • Prevent Sheet Outlines: Adjust individual penny rounds along sheet edges where necessary to maintain consistent spacing between adjoining sheets.

  • Mortar Selection: Use a premium polymer-modified mortar approved for dense natural-stone mosaics.

  • Mortar Application: Use a small-notched trowel and flatten the mortar ridges before setting the sheets. Excess mortar should not rise through the joints.

  • Sheet Alignment: Press each sheet evenly into the mortar using a grout float or padded beating block.

  • Pre-Sealing: Apply a penetrating natural-stone sealer before grouting, particularly in wet, grease-prone or stain-prone areas.

  • Grout Selection: Use grout approved for natural stone. Test the grout on a spare sheet to verify color compatibility and ensure that it will not scratch the surface.

  • Grout Color: Charcoal creates a continuous dark appearance, medium gray provides subtle definition, and white strongly emphasizes each penny round.

  • Wet Areas: Install showers over a complete waterproofing system. Sealing the basalt does not waterproof the substrate.

  • Shower-Floor Approval: Confirm slip resistance, drainage and local wet-floor requirements with the installer because no product-specific DCOF value is published.

  • Cutting: Wet-cut using a diamond blade designed for dense natural stone. Do not dry-cut or grind because fabrication can release respirable crystalline-silica dust.

  • Order Allowance: Add approximately 10–15% for cuts, sheet blending, breakage and future repairs.

Care and Maintenance

  • Clean with warm water and a neutral-pH natural-stone cleaner.

  • Avoid acidic cleaners, vinegar, bleach, abrasive powders and oil-based soaps.

  • Remove soap residue regularly from shower installations to preserve the basalt’s even dark appearance.

  • Wipe away oils, cosmetics and strongly pigmented spills promptly.

  • Use microfiber cloths, soft sponges or nonabrasive nylon brushes.

  • Reseal periodically according to exposure and the sealer manufacturer’s recommendations.

  • Test enhancing sealers carefully because they may deepen the stone from charcoal to near-black.

Design Profile

  • Aesthetic Inspiration: Contemporary minimalism, Scandinavian design, industrial interiors, organic modern and luxury spa environments.

  • Color Character: Charcoal black with subtle mineral speckling and softly varied volcanic-stone movement.

  • Visual Advantage: The rounded pattern softens the bold black color while creating an intricate architectural rhythm.

  • Complementary Stones: Carrara White, Calacatta Gold, Thassos White and Bianco Dolomite.

  • Complementary Materials: White oak, walnut, concrete, fluted glass and warm plaster.

  • Complementary Metals: Brushed brass, polished nickel, matte black and aged bronze.

  • Suggested Grout Colors: Charcoal, graphite, medium gray or contrasting white.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this mosaic made from marble?

No. Although it belongs to Elysium’s Penny Marble Collection, the actual material is genuine natural Black Basalt, an igneous volcanic stone.

What size are the individual penny rounds?

Each circular chip measures approximately 1 inch, or 25 mm, across.

How large is each mosaic sheet?

The nominal sheet dimensions are 11" × 11.75", covering approximately 0.90 square feet.

Can Black Basalt penny rounds be installed on a shower floor?

They may be considered for shower floors, but no product-specific DCOF rating is published. The installer must confirm suitability for the project’s drainage, waterproofing and slip-resistance requirements.

Does Black Basalt require sealing?

Sealing is recommended, especially on floors, shower surfaces, backsplashes and other moisture- or stain-prone installations.

Can this mosaic be installed inside a swimming pool?

Do not specify it for submerged applications without written manufacturer approval. Natural basalt may contain minerals that react to continuous moisture or pool chemicals.

Will every sheet be completely uniform?

No. Subtle differences in charcoal intensity, mineral deposits, speckling and surface texture are inherent characteristics of natural basalt.

Shade Variation

Colors and textures may vary slightly between tile batches due to natural manufacturing variations. For a clear representation, we recommend ordering a sample. Learn more.
