Product Overview

MSI XL Rockmount™ Silver Travertine 9" x 12" x 6" Corner L Panel provides a factory-formed solution for wrapping outside corners, columns, fireplace returns, and architectural projections with the continuous appearance of natural stacked stone. Designed to coordinate with Silver Travertine XL 9" x 24" field panels, the L-shaped corner eliminates exposed cut edges and creates a professional transition around 90-degree corners.

Crafted from genuine travertine, Silver Travertine features soft warm-gray, silver, taupe, and cream tones with subtle natural movement. Its rustic split-face finish produces dimensional shadows and organic texture, making it suitable for contemporary, transitional, Mediterranean, and rustic architectural designs. MSI recommends the coordinating collection for interior accent walls and fireplace surrounds as well as exterior cladding, support beams, and retaining walls.

Recommended Applications

  • Outside Wall Corners and Returns: Creates a finished transition without exposed panel edges or conspicuous miter cuts.

  • Fireplace Surrounds and Chimney Breasts: Wraps projecting fireplace structures with continuous natural-stone texture. Maintain all required clearances from fireboxes, inserts, vents, and combustible materials.

  • Columns and Support Beams: Suitable for cladding square columns, entry pillars, porch supports, and other 90-degree architectural elements.

  • Exterior Facades and Landscape Features: Coordinates with Silver Travertine XL field panels on exterior cladding, outdoor-kitchen walls, retaining-wall facings, and covered patio features.

  • Commercial Feature Walls: Provides a finished corner treatment for reception areas, hospitality spaces, restaurants, and retail displays.

Installation & Handling Guidelines

⚠️ IMPORTANT: THIS IS A CORNER COMPONENT, NOT A FLAT FIELD PANEL

Use the L panel at outside 90-degree transitions and coordinate it with Silver Travertine XL 9" x 24" field panels across adjoining flat wall surfaces.

  • Establish the Corners First: Install and level the corner pieces before filling the adjoining walls with field panels. Alternate or stagger corner joints where practical to avoid visible horizontal seams.

  • Structural Substrate Required: Install over sound concrete, masonry, or properly prepared cement backer board rated for adhered natural-stone veneer. Do not bond heavy stone directly over unstable drywall, wallpaper, paint, or flexible surfaces.

  • Use White LHT Mortar: Set the panels with a high-performance, polymer-modified white large-and-heavy-tile or natural-stone mortar meeting the requirements appropriate to the substrate and environment. White mortar minimizes the possibility of discoloration or shadowing through light areas of the travertine.

  • Achieve Full Mortar Contact: Comb mortar onto the substrate and back-butter each corner component. Press firmly into place to collapse the mortar ridges and support both returns of the L panel.

  • Tight-Joint Appearance: XL Rockmount panels are intended to produce a nearly seamless stacked-stone installation with little or no visible grout. Remove squeezed mortar promptly before it hardens in the textured joints.

  • Dry-Lay Before Setting: Natural travertine varies in shade, pits, banding, and texture. Blend components from several cartons and coordinate corner courses with the field-panel courses before installation.

  • Cut Safely: Use wet-cutting equipment and appropriate respiratory, eye, and hearing protection. Natural stone contains crystalline silica; never dry-cut or dry-grind panels.

  • Exterior Installation: Confirm local requirements for waterproofing, drainage, movement joints, freeze-thaw exposure, wall height, and mechanical support. Horizontal caps and flashing must prevent water from entering behind the veneer.

Care & Maintenance

  • Initial Sealing: Apply a high-quality penetrating natural-stone sealer after installation. Test the sealer on an inconspicuous area first because enhancers and some sealers can deepen the stone’s color.

  • Routine Cleaning: Remove dust with a soft brush or vacuum attachment. Clean periodically with warm water and a neutral-pH cleaner formulated for travertine and natural stone.

  • Avoid Acidic Products: Do not use vinegar, lemon-based cleaners, acidic masonry washes, or harsh descalers. Travertine is calcium-based and can be etched by acids.

  • Avoid Aggressive Pressure Washing: High-pressure spray can loosen individual stone strips, damage the split-face texture, or force moisture behind exterior veneer.

  • Periodic Resealing: Inspect absorbency periodically and reseal when water begins darkening the stone rather than beading on the surface. Exterior and wet-area installations may require more frequent treatment.

Design Profile

  • Aesthetic Inspiration: Contemporary Rustic, Mediterranean, Organic Modern, Transitional and Resort Style.

  • Visual Advantage: The L-shaped construction carries the stacked-stone texture around corners, avoiding the artificial appearance of exposed straight cuts.

  • Color Character: Warm silver-gray travertine with taupe, beige, cream, and occasional darker mineral movement.

  • Complementary Materials: Charcoal porcelain, limestone-look flooring, warm white stucco, natural oak, walnut, matte black steel, aged bronze, and brushed brass.

  • Lighting Recommendation: Grazing light from above or below accentuates the split-face relief, but fixtures should be positioned consistently because strong directional lighting can emphasize substrate or installation irregularities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the 9" x 12" x 6" dimensions mean?

The panel is approximately 9 inches high and wraps a 90-degree corner with one return measuring approximately 12 inches and the other approximately 6 inches. The combined face length is approximately 18 inches, so some sellers describe it as a 9" x 18" corner.

How many corner pieces are required per vertical foot?

Each piece is approximately 9 inches high, providing about 0.75 vertical linear feet. Approximately 1.33 pieces are required per vertical foot, excluding waste and layout adjustments.

How much corner height does one four-piece carton cover?

Four 9-inch-high pieces cover approximately 36 inches, or 3 vertical feet, when stacked in complete courses.

Is Silver Travertine the same material as marble or quartzite?

No. This product is genuine travertine, a calcium-based natural stone. It is more porous and acid-sensitive than quartzite and should be sealed and maintained with stone-safe products.

Does the corner panel require grout?

Typically, no visible grout joint is used. The corner and field panels are installed tightly to produce a continuous dry-stacked appearance. Mortar remains behind the stone as the bonding material.

Can it be used outside?

Yes, the coordinating MSI collection is promoted for exterior architectural cladding. However, suitability depends on the climate, substrate, waterproofing, drainage, mortar system, installation height, and local building requirements.
