Product Overview
Calacatta Gold 2" × 12" Marble Crown Mercer Molding Trim brings sculpted architectural detail and genuine Italian-marble character to interior tile installations. Its traditional Mercer crown profile features a tiered, dimensional face that creates a distinguished transition between tiled and untiled surfaces.
Calacatta Gold marble is celebrated for its luminous white-to-cream background, soft gray movement, and naturally occurring amber and honey-gold veining. Each molding is unique, giving backsplashes, wainscoting, shower walls, niches, and decorative panels the individualized beauty of genuine stone.
Available in polished and honed finishes, Mercer molding coordinates with Calacatta Gold field tile, marble mosaics, and complementary marble-look porcelain.

Installation & Handling Guidelines
⚠️ IMPORTANT: USE WHITE NATURAL-STONE MORTAR
Calacatta Gold is a light-colored marble. Gray or incompatible setting material can cause visible shadowing or unwanted discoloration.
-
Inspect Before Installation: Verify the finish, profile, dimensions, color, veining, and condition of every piece before setting.
-
Dry-Lay and Blend: Arrange the moldings in advance to distribute heavily veined, lightly veined, warmer, and cooler pieces evenly.
-
Prepare the Substrate: Install over a clean, flat, dry, stable wall capable of supporting the molding’s dimensional profile.
-
Wet-Area Waterproofing: Shower installations require a complete approved waterproofing system. Stone sealer does not replace waterproofing.
-
Mortar Selection: Use a premium white polymer-modified mortar approved for natural marble and vertical applications.
-
Back-Butter Each Piece: Apply mortar evenly to the flat back and obtain full support behind the projecting crown profile.
-
Maintain a Level Line: Use a laser or level when installing long horizontal runs. Do not rely on nearby cabinetry, ceilings, or floors being perfectly level.
-
Grout Joints: Allow a consistent joint based on the molding’s actual calibration and installer recommendations. Do not force irregular natural-stone pieces into a butt-joint installation.
-
Grout Selection: Use unsanded grout or a fine-aggregate grout confirmed safe for polished marble. Test the grout on spare material first.
-
Movement Accommodation: Use flexible color-matched sealant at inside corners, changes of plane, and transitions between dissimilar materials.
-
Outside Corners: Fabricate matching 45-degree miters with a wet saw and continuous-rim diamond blade designed for marble.
-
Pre-Sealing: Apply a penetrating natural-stone sealer before grouting when recommended for the selected finish and installation environment.
-
Cutting Safety: Wet-cut the molding and follow appropriate silica-dust safety requirements. Never dry-cut or grind natural stone.
-
Order Allowance: Add approximately 10–15% for cuts, miters, natural variation, damage, and future repairs.
Care & Maintenance
-
Clean with warm water and a neutral-pH cleaner formulated for natural marble.
-
Avoid vinegar, lemon, acidic bathroom cleaners, bleach, abrasive powders, and aggressive scouring pads.
-
Wipe spills and cleaner residue promptly to reduce staining and etching.
-
Use a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush to clean recessed areas of the crown profile.
-
Reseal according to use, exposure, and the penetrating-sealer manufacturer’s instructions.
-
Expect polished marble to develop a natural patina over time, especially in frequently cleaned installations.
Design Profile
-
Aesthetic Character: Traditional European, Classical Italian, transitional luxury, and sophisticated contemporary.
-
Profile Character: A substantial, tiered crown shape with greater architectural depth than pencil or bullnose trim.
-
Polished Finish: Creates a glossy, light-reflective surface that intensifies the marble’s veining and crystalline structure.
-
Honed Finish: Provides a softer, low-sheen surface for more understated contemporary interiors.
-
Complementary Materials: Calacatta Gold marble, warm-white porcelain, ivory quartz, white oak, walnut, and decorative plaster.
-
Complementary Metals: Brushed brass, champagne bronze, polished nickel, and antique gold.
-
Suggested Grout Colors: Warm white, ivory, alabaster, or very pale gray.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Mercer crown molding?
Mercer is a sculpted, tiered marble molding used to cap tile installations or create a prominent decorative border. It is more dimensional than pencil, bullnose, or flat liner trim.
What size is this molding?
Each piece measures approximately 2 inches high by 12 inches long, with a profile projecting up to approximately 3/4 inch from the wall.
How much does one piece cover?
Each 12-inch molding provides approximately one linear foot of horizontal trim coverage. It should be calculated by linear feet rather than square feet.
What is the difference between Mercer crown and OG-1 chair rail?
Mercer has a tiered crown-style profile intended to create a decorative cap. OG-1 has a single-step chair-rail profile with a different contour and shadow line.
Can it be installed inside a shower?
Yes, on appropriate shower walls when installed over an approved waterproofing system using white natural-stone mortar, marble-safe grout, movement joints, and suitable sealing. Avoid pools, submerged applications, and steam showers unless specifically approved.
Does it require sealing?
Yes. A penetrating natural-stone sealer is generally recommended before grouting and periodically afterward. Sealing improves stain resistance but does not make marble waterproof or etch-proof.
Will every piece contain gold veining?
No. Some pieces may contain prominent gold or amber movement, while others may be primarily white and gray. This variation is inherent to genuine Calacatta Gold marble.
How are outside corners finished?
Outside corners are normally fabricated by miter-cutting two pieces at 45 degrees. Because the profiles must align accurately, professional stone fabrication is recommended.
