Installation and Handling Guidelines
⚠️ IMPORTANT: NATURAL STONE PRE-SEALING & MORTAR PROTOCOL
-
Pre-Sealing Essential: Carrara marble is a natural porous stone. Apply a penetrating natural stone sealer to the pencil liners prior to grouting to guard against grout haze and pigment absorption.
-
Pure White Thin-Set Mortar Required: Always set Carrara marble trim using a polymer-modified pure white thin-set mortar (ANSI A118.4). Gray or dark mortars can shadow through translucent light marble and permanently discolor the stone.
-
Mitering Corner Joints: Cut 45-degree miter joints carefully using a wet tile saw equipped with a continuous-rim diamond blade engineered for natural marble.
-
Grout Joint Alignment: Align pencil liners tightly against adjacent field tiles, maintaining a uniform 1/16" to 1/8" grout line.
Care and Maintenance
-
Routine Cleaning: Clean regularly with warm water and a neutral pH stone cleaner. Avoid acidic products, vinegar, bleach, lemon cleaners, or abrasive scrubbers, which will etch polished marble surfaces.
-
Periodic Resealing: Reapply a quality penetrating stone sealer every 1 to 2 years (or more frequently in heavy shower wet areas) to preserve water repellency and stain defense.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Carrara White pencil liner trim require sealing?
Yes. As natural marble, it is porous and should be sealed with a penetrating stone sealer prior to grouting and maintained periodically over time.
Can this pencil liner be installed in wet areas like shower walls?
Yes. It is ideal for shower wall borders, niche frames, and transition edges when installed over a properly waterproofed substrate using white thin-set mortar.
Why is white thinset mortar required for setting this trim?
Carrara marble is slightly translucent. Gray thin-set mortar can show through the stone, causing dark shadows or discoloration along the pencil liner.
