Product Overview
Honey Onyx 5/8" x 1¼" Mini-Brick Polished Mosaic Tile brings luminous golden color and finely scaled architectural detail to backsplashes, bathrooms, shower walls, niches, and decorative features. Crafted from genuine natural onyx, the mosaic displays a rich mixture of honey gold, amber, caramel, butterscotch, and creamy ivory.
The petite rectangular pieces are arranged in a classic offset brick pattern on approximately 12" × 12" mesh-backed sheets. Its polished finish reveals the onyx’s crystalline structure and natural translucency, creating a jewel-like surface that changes subtly under different lighting conditions.
Each sheet is inherently unique. Variation in color, banding, clouding, mineral deposits, and translucency is expected and contributes to the material’s natural character.

Honey Onyx is a delicate decorative stone. It should not be represented as having porcelain-level durability, water absorption, chemical resistance, or exterior performance.
Recommended Applications
-
Kitchen Backsplashes: Creates a warm, jewel-like focal point behind countertops, sinks, ranges, and beverage areas.
-
Vanity and Powder-Room Walls: Reflects ambient light and adds golden depth to compact interiors.
-
Shower Walls and Niches: Suitable over a complete waterproofing system using setting materials approved for moisture-sensitive onyx.
-
Decorative Bathroom Floors: May be considered for appropriate low-traffic areas, subject to slip and maintenance approval.
-
Fireplace Surrounds: Creates a luminous decorative feature when installed over an approved substrate and outside restricted heat-clearance areas.
-
Feature Walls: Suitable for reception desks, boutique interiors, display niches, bars, and hospitality accents.
-
Decorative Borders and Insets: The small brick scale coordinates easily with larger-format onyx, marble, and limestone tiles.
-
Specialized Backlit Features: Natural onyx can transmit light, although the mesh backing and conventional mortar may remain visible without a purpose-designed system.
Because no published DCOF rating is available, polished Honey Onyx should not be promoted for shower floors or other wet walking surfaces without project-specific professional approval.
Installation & Handling Guidelines
⚠️ IMPORTANT: TRANSLUCENT AND MOISTURE-SENSITIVE ONYX
Honey Onyx can darken, shadow, curl, or discolor when installed with unsuitable mortar. Test the complete setting, grout, and sealing system on spare material before installation.
-
Use White Setting Material: Never install light-colored onyx with gray mortar. Use a bright-white rapid-setting natural-stone mortar or epoxy adhesive specifically approved for translucent, moisture-sensitive onyx.
-
Flatten Mortar Ridges: Trowel lines may be visible through translucent pieces. Flatten the mortar into a smooth, consistent bed before placing each sheet.
-
Inspect and Dry-Lay: Arrange all sheets before installation to balance lighter cream pieces with darker amber and caramel areas.
-
Check Sheet Alignment: Adjust individual pieces along sheet edges to maintain consistent spacing and prevent visible sheet outlines.
-
Substrate Preparation: The substrate must be clean, flat, stable, and suitable for delicate natural-stone mosaics.
-
Wet-Area Waterproofing: Install shower applications over a complete waterproofing system. Sealing the onyx does not waterproof the wall assembly.
-
Pre-Sealing: Apply a penetrating sealer approved for polished onyx before grouting. Test first to evaluate possible color changes.
-
Grout Selection: Use unsanded grout or a fine-aggregate grout specifically approved for polished natural stone. Test it to ensure that it will not scratch, stain, or darken the onyx.
-
Grout Color: Warm ivory, cream, or pale beige generally complements the honey coloration without visually overpowering the small brick pattern.
-
Cutting: Wet-cut with a clean continuous-rim diamond blade designed for delicate natural stone. Fully support the mosaic to reduce chipping and breakage.
-
Movement Accommodation: Provide perimeter, change-of-plane, and field movement joints following TCNA EJ171 and applicable construction requirements.
-
Order Allowance: Add approximately 10–15% for cuts, breakage, color blending, sheet alignment, and future repairs.
Backlighting Guidelines
-
The onyx itself is naturally translucent, but the standard mesh backing and conventional mortar can interrupt light transmission.
-
A backlit installation may require a translucent adhesive, diffused LED panels, specialized backing, and a purpose-built translucent substrate.
-
Keep the lighting source uniformly spaced to prevent bright spots, shadows, and visible sheet patterns.
-
Construct and approve a full-size illuminated mockup before installing the complete feature.
-
Provide ventilation and service access for the lighting and electrical components.
Care & Maintenance
-
Clean with warm water and a neutral-pH cleaner formulated for onyx or delicate natural stone.
-
Never use vinegar, lemon, acidic bathroom cleaners, bleach, abrasive powders, or harsh grout cleaners.
-
Wipe up oils, cosmetics, wine, coffee, citrus, and strongly pigmented liquids promptly.
-
Use microfiber cloths, soft sponges, or non-abrasive brushes.
-
Avoid aggressive scrubbing tools that could scratch or dull the polished surface.
-
Reapply a penetrating natural-stone sealer according to exposure and the sealer manufacturer’s instructions.
-
Protect the mosaic from heavy impact because onyx can scratch, chip, and fracture more readily than porcelain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this genuine natural onyx?
Yes. It is genuine Honey Onyx with natural differences in color, banding, clouding, and translucency.
What size are the individual pieces?
Each rectangular piece measures approximately 5/8" × 1¼".
What size is the mosaic sheet?
The mesh-mounted sheet measures approximately 12" × 12" and covers approximately one square foot.
How thick is the mosaic?
The mosaic is approximately 3/8", or 10 mm, thick.
Is this a brick or herringbone pattern?
This product is the offset mini-brick mosaic. A separate Honey Onyx mini-herringbone product may use the same approximate chip dimensions but should not be confused with this layout.
Does Honey Onyx require sealing?
Yes. Use a penetrating sealer specifically approved for polished onyx before grouting and periodically after installation.
Can it be installed on shower walls?
Yes, when installed over a properly waterproofed substrate using white setting material approved for moisture-sensitive onyx.
Can it be used on shower floors?
No published DCOF rating is available. Polished onyx is delicate and may become slippery when wet, so shower-floor use requires professional approval.
Can the mosaic be backlit?
The stone can transmit light, but the mesh and ordinary mortar may create visible shadows. A specialized backlighting system and full-size mockup are required.
Can it be installed outdoors?
Exterior installation is not recommended unless the supplier and installer provide written approval for the particular climate and application.
