Product Overview

Calacatta Violet Purple Marble Tile 12" x 24" presents one of Italian marble’s most distinctive and expressive color stories. Its creamy white field is crossed by dramatic violet, burgundy, plum, wine-red, and charcoal-gray veining, creating a richly layered breccia appearance.

The large rectangular format allows the marble’s bold movement to flow across floors and walls with fewer grout interruptions. Available in polished and honed finishes, Calacatta Violet can deliver either a reflective, jewel-like surface or a softer architectural appearance.

Every tile is naturally unique. Differences in veining, background color, mineral inclusions, and the proportion of white and burgundy areas are inherent characteristics of this premium natural stone.

Finish Options

  • Polished: A glossy, light-reflective surface that deepens the violet and burgundy coloration and emphasizes the marble’s crystalline structure.

  • Honed: A smooth, low-sheen surface that softens the color contrast and creates a more understated architectural appearance.

Order each finish separately and confirm the selected finish before installation. Polished and honed tiles should not be mixed unless the design intentionally calls for contrasting surface treatments.

Recommended Applications

  • Statement Floors: Creates a dramatic natural-stone surface in foyers, powder rooms, dressing rooms, dining areas, and formal living spaces.

  • Bathroom Walls: Ideal for vanity walls, tub surrounds, wainscoting, and full-height decorative installations.

  • Shower Walls: Suitable over a complete waterproofing system with setting materials approved for natural marble.

  • Kitchen Backsplashes: Introduces bold Italian marble movement behind ranges, sinks, counters, and beverage stations.

  • Fireplace Surrounds: Creates a sculptural focal point when installed within the fireplace manufacturer’s clearance requirements.

  • Commercial Interiors: Appropriate for boutiques, hotels, restaurants, reception areas, luxury showrooms, and other approved interior applications.

  • Decorative Furniture and Millwork: May be professionally fabricated for inset panels, tabletops, shelving, or other supported decorative features.

Installation & Handling Guidelines

⚠️ IMPORTANT: DRY-LAY THE COMPLETE INSTALLATION

Calacatta Violet has substantial natural variation. Lay out all tiles before installation to balance white areas, violet veining, burgundy sections, and brecciated patterns across the finished surface.

  • Inspect Before Installation: Review every tile for color, finish, dimensions, veining, and acceptable natural characteristics. Installation constitutes acceptance of the material.

  • Blend Multiple Cartons: Open several cartons simultaneously and distribute lighter, darker, heavily veined, and quieter pieces throughout the installation.

  • White Mortar Required: Use a premium white non-staining natural-stone mortar approved for light-colored marble and the installation environment.

  • Resin or Mesh Backing: If the tiles contain resin reinforcement or mesh backing, use epoxy mortar or a compatible primer and high-performance white mortar approved by the setting-material manufacturer.

  • Mortar Coverage: Directionally trowel the mortar and back-butter the tiles as necessary. Obtain at least 80% coverage in dry interiors and 95% coverage in wet areas, with complete support along edges and corners.

  • Substrate Flatness: Correct substrate irregularities before installation. Large-format marble requires a flat, rigid, and dimensionally stable surface.

  • Pre-Sealing: Apply a penetrating sealer approved for Calacatta marble before grouting. Test first to confirm that it does not darken the white field or violet veining.

  • Grout Selection: Use unsanded grout or a fine-aggregate grout approved for polished natural stone. Test the grout to ensure it will not scratch, stain, or become trapped in surface fissures.

  • Grout Joint: Use a minimum joint of approximately 1/16", or wider if required by tile calibration, substrate conditions, or the installer.

  • Wet Areas: Shower walls require a complete waterproofing system. Sealer helps resist staining but does not waterproof the installation.

  • Shower-Floor Restriction: This 12" x 24" field tile should not be used on conventional shower floors. Select an approved Calacatta Violet mosaic for proper drainage and additional grout-joint traction.

  • Movement Joints: Include perimeter and field movement accommodation following TCNA EJ171 and applicable construction requirements.

  • Cutting: Wet-cut with a clean continuous-rim diamond blade designed for marble. Support the tile fully to reduce chipping and protect finished edges.

  • Order Allowance: Add approximately 15–20% for cuts, breakage, vein selection, layout balancing, and future repairs. Highly selective layouts may require additional material.

Care & Maintenance

  • Clean with warm water and a neutral-pH cleaner formulated for natural marble.

  • Never use vinegar, lemon, acidic bathroom cleaners, bleach, abrasive powders, or calcium-removing products.

  • Wipe spills promptly, especially wine, citrus, coffee, cosmetics, oils, and strongly pigmented liquids.

  • Use microfiber cloths, soft sponges, and non-abrasive cleaning pads.

  • Reapply a penetrating natural-stone sealer according to exposure and the sealer manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Protect floors with walk-off mats and felt pads beneath furniture.

  • Expect polished marble in frequently used areas to develop a natural patina over time.

Design Profile

  • Aesthetic Inspiration: Italian palazzo, Art Deco glamour, contemporary maximalism, boutique hospitality, and collectible-stone interiors.

  • Color Character: Creamy white with violet, plum, burgundy, wine-red, and charcoal-gray veining.

  • Visual Advantage: The 12" x 24" format displays the bold breccia pattern with fewer grout interruptions.

  • Complementary Stones: Thassos White, Nero Marquina, Bianco Dolomite, and coordinating Calacatta Violet mosaics.

  • Complementary Materials: Dark walnut, white oak, smoked glass, cream plaster, and lacquered cabinetry.

  • Complementary Metals: Brushed brass, antique gold, polished nickel, bronze, and matte black.

  • Suggested Grout Colors: Warm white creates continuity with the background, while pale gray provides subtle tile definition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Calacatta Violet and Calacatta Viola the same stone?

The names are commonly used interchangeably for Italian white marble with prominent violet, burgundy, and gray breccia-style veining. Individual quarry selections and production lots can differ considerably.

Is this genuine Italian marble?

Yes. Calacatta Violet is genuine natural marble quarried in Italy.

Will every tile have the same amount of purple veining?

No. Some pieces may be predominantly creamy white, while others contain large burgundy or violet sections. This substantial variation is part of the stone’s natural character.

What is the difference between polished and honed finishes?

Polished marble has a glossy, reflective surface that intensifies its color. Honed marble has a smooth, low-sheen finish with softer contrast.

Does Calacatta Violet require sealing?

Yes. Seal the marble before grouting and reseal periodically according to use and exposure.

Can the 12" x 24" tile be installed on shower walls?

Yes, when installed over a complete waterproofing system using white setting material approved for natural marble.

Can it be installed on a shower floor?

The 12" x 24" format is not recommended for conventional shower floors. Use an approved smaller-format or mosaic version instead.

Why is dry laying especially important?

The distribution of white, violet, burgundy, and heavily brecciated areas varies significantly. Dry laying allows the installer to create an intentional, balanced composition before setting the tiles permanently.
