Product Overview

Cerdomus Ostuni Avorio 16" x 24" Porcelain Tile (part of the Pietra di Ostuni series) is an authentic Italian vitrified porcelain field tile manufactured by Cerdomus Ceramiche in Italy. Inspired by the sun-bleached, ancient Apulian limestone found throughout the historic city of Ostuni in southern Italy, the Avorio (Ivory) colorway delivers a warm, luminous palette of pale cream, soft ivory, and gentle warm-beige undertones.

Measuring 16 inches by 24 inches (approx. 40 cm x 60 cm), this classic 2:3 rectangular aspect ratio features antique chiseled-style edge profiles and a subtly textured, non-glare surface finish. It captures the visual depth and rustic character of aged European flagstone while offering the technical strength, stain resistance, and zero-maintenance durability of high-fired Italian porcelain.

Recommended Applications

  • Residential Living & Kitchen Floors: Creates an open, Mediterranean-inspired floor field across kitchens, dining areas, and main living zones with an elongated, expansive layout.

  • Primary Bathroom & Shower Walls: Ideal for full-height bathroom walls, tub surrounds, and main bathroom floors seeking a natural stone aesthetic without specular glare.

  • Outdoor Patios & Transition Zones: Impervious vitrified porcelain (< 0.5% water absorption) allows for continuous indoor-to-outdoor transitions on covered patios and walkways.

Design Profile

  • Aesthetic Inspiration: Apulian Villa, French Countryside, Tuscan Farmhouse, Contemporary Organic Luxury.

  • Popular Layout Patterns:

    • 33% Staggered Running Bond: Classic rectangular layout that elongates room proportions.

    • Straight Stack (Horizontal or Vertical): Modern, linear grid orientation that feels clean and architectural.

    • French Modular Versailles Pattern: Combined with 16x16, 8x16, and 8x8 sizes for an authentic historic Mediterranean floor.

  • System Cohesion: Coordinates with companion Ostuni Avorio 16x16 field tiles, 8x8 accents, and the 2x2 sheeted mosaic for complete, color-matched bathroom suites.

Installation and Handling Guidelines

⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: LAYOUT & MORTAR PROTOCOL

  • Thinset Mortar Selection: Install using a polymer-modified Large & Heavy Tile (LFT) thinset specified for porcelain tile applications (ANSI A118.4 or ANSI A118.15 such as MAPEI® Ultraflex LFT or LATICRETE® Multimax Lite).

  • Running Bond Offset Rule: When laying 16" x 24" tiles in a staggered running bond layout, TCNA standards recommend offsetting joints by no more than 33% (approx. 8 inches) rather than a 50% brick bond to minimize natural tile bow lippage.

  • Grout Joint Width: Because Pietra di Ostuni features a rustic, chiseled edge profile, use a minimum 1/8" to 3/16" grout joint to complement its aged flagstone character.

  • Versailles / French Pattern Modular Layouts: The 16" x 24" size is engineered to install standalone or combine seamlessly into multi-size French Versailles patterns alongside companion sizes from the Ostuni collection (16x16, 8x16, and 8x8).

Professional Recommendations

  • Dry Lay & Shade Blending: The Ostuni collection carries natural shade variation (V2/V3 rating). Always blend tiles from multiple boxes prior to setting to distribute ivory and warm cream tones evenly.

  • Grout Selection: Pair with a warm cream, off-white, or light beige high-performance grout (such as MAPEI® Ultracolor Plus FA in Sahara or Ivory).

Care and Maintenance

  • Routine Cleaning: Damp mop easily using warm water and a neutral pH floor cleaner. The matte surface naturally resists water spots, mineral stains, and foot traffic marks.

  • 100% Stain & Water Proof: Impervious vitrified porcelain protects against deep staining from wine, oils, mud, and household spills.

  • Zero Sealing Required: Unlike natural travertine or limestone flagstones that require annual sealing, glazed porcelain requires no topical sealers or impregnators over its lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the advantage of a 16x24 format over a square 16x16 tile?

The 16x24 rectangular format offers an elongated aspect ratio that visually stretches room dimensions when laid in running bond or vertical stack patterns. It reduces total grout line frequency while retaining standard, manageable handling for installers.

Can Cerdomus Ostuni 16x24 be used on shower walls?

Yes! The 16" x 24" format is an excellent choice for full-height shower walls. Its non-glare matte finish resists soap scum and water spots while creating a spa-like limestone wall surface.

Does this Italian tile require special sealers after installation?

No. Vitrified porcelain from Cerdomus is non-porous and never requires sealers or topical waxes. Clean up grout haze promptly during installation, and the tile is ready for routine use.
