Installation & Handling Guidelines

⚠️ IMPORTANT: HEAVY NATURAL-STONE WALL INSTALLATION

XL ledger panels are heavier and more dimensional than conventional wall tile. Confirm substrate strength, mortar suitability, waterproofing, flashing, and exterior support requirements before installation.

• Approved Substrate: Install over clean, flat, structurally sound concrete, masonry, or properly secured cementitious backer board.

• Mortar Selection: Use a polymer-modified Large and Heavy Tile mortar meeting ANSI A118.4 or A118.15 and approved for natural slate.

• Mortar Coverage: Directionally trowel the substrate and back-butter each panel. Exterior and moisture-exposed installations require substantially complete mortar coverage.

• Grout-Free Installation: Butt panels tightly together without conventional grout joints. Remove exposed mortar from the stone before it hardens.

• Stagger Panel Joints: Offset vertical joints between courses and avoid repeating obvious seams. Test-fit neighboring panels before applying mortar.

• Blend the Stone: Open several cartons and distribute gold, copper, gray, brown, and green-toned pieces throughout the installation.

• Corner Treatment: Use the coordinating California Gold 9" x 12" x 6" L-shaped corner panel, item number LPNLSCALGLD918COR, for outside corners and columns.

• Exterior Installation: Include appropriate waterproofing, flashing, drainage, movement accommodation, and freeze-thaw-rated setting materials.

Natural Slate Characteristics

California Gold is genuine natural slate. Differences in color, cleft texture, thickness, mineral deposits, and surface relief should be expected. Limited flaking or shedding may occur during handling and immediately after installation as loose surface particles separate from the natural cleft.

Dry-lay the panels before setting and distribute the colors throughout the wall. Natural variation should not be treated as a manufacturing defect.

Care & Maintenance

• Remove dust using a soft-bristle brush or vacuum attachment.

• Clean with warm water and a neutral-pH natural-stone cleaner.

• Avoid vinegar, acidic cleaners, bleach, abrasive chemicals, and wire brushes.

• Do not use high-pressure washing close to the stone or mortar joints.

• A penetrating natural-stone sealer may be considered for exterior, moisture-prone, grease-prone, or stain-prone areas.

• Test sealers first because enhancing products may deepen the gold, brown, and rust coloration.

• Inspect exterior installations periodically for open joints, failed flashing, or moisture intrusion.
